Location:

Caballar is a village in Segovia with around 105 inhabitants.

The most important building is the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, 13th century Romanesque work. Inside you can admire the altarpiece, baroque work by Eugenio de la Cruz in 1683. A side chapel is dedicated to three saints: San Frutos (Segovia patron saint), Santa Engracia and San Valentín, there is a 18th century shrine that keeps Santa Engracia and San Valentín skulls, who were beheaded by Muslims and their heads thrown into the Fuente Santa. Still, their bodies were buried in San Frutos Duratón priory (Sepulveda). Near the town, Fuente Santa is sheltered by a 18th-century quadrangular pavilion and the Fuente Redonda, simpler and formed by a small wall of masonry. In September a pilgrimage to the Fuente Santa is celebrated, but the most important holidays are celebrated on October 25 - San Frutos Day.

Felipe V retired to this place in 1724 and during the next twenty years magnified the gardens and the palace, which was used as a summer residence by all his successors until Alfonso XIII. The gardens are one of the best examples of eighteenth century gardens still preserved, and were designed by the French architect René Carlier. They are formed with flowerbeds and vegetation groves delimited by hornbeam walls, and alignments of trees - especially lime and Buckeyes.
